Mary Charles Sutphin, CNM

Mary Charles Sutphin has been a  nurse-midwife for more than thirty years.  She joined Triangle OB/GYN in the Fall of 2008 after having practiced midwifery in the Raleigh area for 25 years.   Prior to that, she practiced in Beckley, West Virginia where she was one of the first nurse-midwives to be licensed in the state of West Virginia.  She earned her Master’s Degree in Maternity Nursing and Midwifery Certificate in 1973 from Columbia University in New York City.  Nurse-midwives delivered both of her adult children and Mary Charles delivered both of her grandchildren.   Mary Charles says that “midwifery is in my soul” and “it is who I am”.  In addition to “birthing babies”, Mary Charles helps to “birth” nursing students as well.  She is on the faculty at UNC School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and helps teach maternity nursing at Duke School of Nursing.  Mary Charles is a strong advocate for The Hallmarks of Midwifery, especially birth as a normal physiologic process and advocacy of non-intervention.
